STAR COCOONED IN MEDIOCRITY

"The always visible black and white portrait of the first Prudhomme baby symbolized a bitter-sweet moment in time. Our sister Regina Denise was a beautiful child. Her skin, like Mama's, was a delicate sable. Her thick hair formed jet black helixes that were brushed into three plaits with a curly row of baby hair framing her rounded face, following the same repetitious pattern of l's that I remember practicing when learning cursive for the first time. Just two perfectly shaped white teeth had cut her lower gum line – these being exposed as the infant graced the camera with the slightest smile, cajoled by some unseen prankster just out of range of the lens. The eyes were like moon pies, nearly black rather than brown. Denise's eyelashes could have been featured in a print ad for Cover Girl – thicker than any I'd seen in the beauty magazines. Even though the photo was shot without color, I expected that the little eyelet dress and ribbons in the hair must have been pink – Grammah would have seen to that.

This precious creature – a mere two years of age – died of leukemia, a disease unheard of on either side of the family. In 1962, this disease spelled a death sentence. But now, medical science has produced wonders. Thanks be to God."
